Had an awesome day yesterday with some of the coolest people I know! I celebrated my birthday by eating an inhuman amount of sushi (all of the sushi in the first picture was just my order.) My friend Ben remarked "I would offer to buy your sushi, but there's no way I'm paying for a Kyle Pulver amount of sushi." It's understandable... last time I ate sushi with Ben my bill ended up being four times the amount of his.
Then my friend Linda made that red velvet cake with the momma from Offspring Fling on it, and it was amazing. The cupcakes we're also red velvet and delicious (although I feel like there was a missed opportunity there to make the cupcakes all babies from Offspring Fling too, haha!) but hey, now that I have a cake of my game, I can finally make it onto Kotaku, right?

The voting for the TIGSource Versus Competition has officially concluded (Well, it actually concluded a week ago or so but I've been too distracted to post about it) and Space Sushi tied with X-Bones, and Tetris Fight Club for 10th place with a whopping 6 votes. There were 80-something entries for this competition, so barely scraping into the top 10 is pretty decent!
The big winner from the competition is 0Space by none other than Teknopants. I know that local multiplayer is very rare, but if you ever get the chance to go head to head with someone on the same keyboard then definitely give 0Space a whirl, and while you're at it you can also give the other 80 or so games a chance too. (If you have an entire day to kill, I guess.)
The idea of versus was a great competition theme, but it kinda falls short because not a lot of players have the opportunity to play local multiplayer on their computers. The time frame of a TIGSource competition doesn't really allow for a robust online multiplayer system for these games, so I feel like not a lot of people really got a chance to play the games this time. Also each voter only had 3 votes for 80 entries, so there wasn't a good distribution of ranks among the results (A majority of the games tied for 58th place with 0 votes.) It's definitely a lot of fun to make a 2 player game, but the severe audience reduction is definitely noticeable, so whenever I make Space Sushi Deluxe, I'll be sure to include a single player campaign. ;D

I like to make up version numbers pretty randomly but I'm calling this version 1.0 because I'm calling it FINISHED for the sake of the TIGSource competition.
- Upped bullet velocity
- Changed controls
- Added highlights to dead fish
- Dead fish flash before they disappear
- Changed win conditions: player with most money always wins
- Causing an extinction costs a player $100 per kill
- Extinction detection: player who most recently killed the extinct species gets the penalty
- Money hidden until the end of the round
- Stunned text when players are stunned
- Smoother end transition back to title
- Modified hud to hide extra info
- Modified ending stats screen
- Dead fish now attract to a near by player
- Fish now trickle in at the start instead of being dumped in all at once
Download the new version right here. There is a Windows executable and a Mac OSX .app in the zip file.
Tell me what you think!
I'm looking for any feedback on the game, and it's really tough since not a lot of people can play local 2 player games... so if you have any thoughts or comments either use the comments to get back to me, or use the form on the bottom of my site to contact me.

The Winnitron is being packed up and transported to GDC this year, and will be playable at the expo hall. There's gonna be a lot of kick ass awesome games to play on it which you can check out in this mega sweet video trailer for it.
Included in this fine line up of games are two of my games! Verge and Space Sushi are both playable on the machine, and on top of that I'll be stopping by the booth on Wednesday, March 2nd, at 1:30pm to talk about my games and other cool stuff. Joining me for that time slot is none other than game developer sweet heart Chevy Ray of Flashpunk fame! It's gonna be a good time for kids of all ages.
If you happen to find yourself at GDC this year then stop on by the expo hall and play some rad games on the Winnitron. SEE YOU THERE!
